Living the Life, 2012, Quicktime Movie

Continuing my exploration of character, I began to focus my attention on luxury and faux-luxury. I’ve been longing to find a way to relax completely in my life, so I attempted to create a character who could luxuriate to the point of hyperbole. But the hyperbole became more of a statement or sensation, a kind of Wal-mart replica of an outdated notion of class or comfort. So I took to the dank eddies of the James river, surrounded in my cocoon of plastic tropical flowers, and sunk into the idea of decadence.

The Whole Truth Museum: Art Show opening May 4th 7-10 pm!!!!!!

PLEASE REBLOG!

This is the art show/VCUarts grant project that I have been working on with Jaimie McKay, Elise Isom, and Cameron Robinson for the past year.

The aim of the WTM (Whole Truth Museum) is to broadcast some up-and-coming artists making compelling work about a city that is jam-packed with history. We are questioning the authority of the history books and of other supposedly unbiased, “objective” sources of the “truth.”

We are trying to support some great undergrad artists who would otherwise get ignored in the bullshit, white, cis, art-bro patriarchal narrative. So please join us May 4th for an evening of delicious food (and probably a dance party in the back yard.)

My followers will recognize some of the amazing artists listed below:

Colleen Billings

Safiya Bridgewater

Maria Camia

Cath Cowan

Jaclyn Cummings

Mandy Fitzgerald

Brianna Gribben

Maggie Grymes

Jennifer Guillen

Julie Hundley

Elise Isom

Jaimie McKay

Cody Platt

Cameron Robinson

Ha Tran

Show opens on May 4th, 7 pm to 10 pm at

Peer Pleasure Gallery

1136 W. Grace Street

Show is also open to the public from May 7th to May 12th, 2 pm to 6 pm

Uhmm… THIS IS AWESOME.

Are you coming to this show which we have all been so hard on? Are you gonna fill yourself to the absolute brim with thoughts and ideas after viewing our amazing work? Are you gonna come celebrate with us?

Don’t worry I’ve answered for you:

my-own-dark-corner:

Bimbo’s Initiation” a 1931 animated short (Talkartoon) created by Fleischer Studios. The cartoon star Bimbo and Betty Boop, and it’s the last to be animated by Grim Natwick, the co-creator of the characters.

This particular short standsout from the rest of the series for it’s surreal and nightmarish atmosphere, being often called “one of the darkest”.

And I admit that this one’s pretty creepy.

Chantal Akerman, Jeanne Dielman, 23 quai du Commerce, 1080 Bruxelles, 1975.

I mean the fact that the camera was so static that Delphine would leave the frame for over a minute and the viewer is left sitting there was groundbreaking. It’s reflexive in a way that had never been done…..<3 <3
